L. Vernon Miller, Jr. died on October 28, 2022, in Annapolis, Maryland where he had lived since 1969. Vernon was born in Baltimore in 1936, the son of L. Vernon Miller, Sr. and Katherine Baum Miller. He attended Calvert School, Gilman School, Princeton University and, after two years in the U.S. Army, the University of Virginia Law School, graduating in 1964. He was a member of the Baltimore law firm of Barton, Wilmer, Bramble and Pennimann. In 1969, he moved to Annapolis and, with his cousin and dear friend John G. Rouse, formed the law firm Rouse, Underwood, and Miller. Vernon was a member of the South River Club, the Annapolis Yacht Club, and the Gibson Island Club.
Vernon was loved for his humor of many faces, including his dedication to, and dramatic delivery of waggish jokes. He loved words, classical music, reading and his collected books, and he especially loved his daily ritual of doing the New York Times crossword puzzle, always timed and in ink. Vernon wrote poems for his family and friends, on the right occasions, and dabbled in short story writing.
Vernon is survived by his two children, Bruce Miller of Boston, Massachusetts and Ann H. Kaye of Washington D.C.; his two grandsons, Alexander and Charlie Kaye; and a niece, Clemmie Miller of Baltimore. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Decatur, and Jimmie. He is survived by his first wife, Margaret Hendrick (née McPherson); his second wife, Patricia McHenry (Hartman, Zantzinger) Miller recently predeceased him. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vernon’s memory may be sent to Ginger Cove retirement community in Annapolis. Plans for a small gathering at the time of his burial are being arranged.
