John Jacob Youngblood, age 83, Annapolis MD passed away on November 22, 2024 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy, his children Jill Scott and Beth Powell, their spouses Shane & Greg, grandchildren; Madison, Jack, Brooke, Ian & Maggie, a niece, Molly Wiles & nephew, Daniel Dooley. He was an educator with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, most recently as a guidance counselor at Crofton Middle School. He was predeceased by his parents Jake & Jerry, his sister, Mary and brother in law, Jim.
John was born on March 17, 1941 in Montrose, PA. He graduated from Mansfield State University with a BA in Education in 1963. He moved to Annapolis, MD where he began his career in Education. He taught Social Studies at Annapolis Middle School where he met the love of his life, Judy. They were engaged at Cheat Lake in West Virginia and married in December 1965 in Charleston, WV, near where Judy grew up.
He obtained his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Towson University. John worked as a Middle School Guidance counselor at Annapolis Junior High and later Crofton Middle School. He retired from Education in 1997.
John was active with St. Mary’s Parish as a CCD Teacher for many years. Post-retirement, he was a Bailiff for Anne Arundel County and later, as a Tour Guide for the United States Naval Academy.
John was an extensive traveler, visiting Iceland, Hawaii, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Canada, Panama, Bermuda and many Caribbean Islands. He loved to open his home to anyone who needed a place to stay. He & Judy sponsored a few Midshipmen from the Academy, a Spanish exchange student from Tenerife, Spain, teachers that were getting their careers started in the area, and many family and friends as they were traveling to the Annapolis area.
John enjoyed his Boston Whaler, his pop-up camper and spending time with his family and friends. Every Tuesday, John could be found on a local golf course with his buddies. On Fridays, he volunteered at the Senior Center in Annapolis. John was a Snowbird, traveling to Boynton Beach, Florida for 3-4 months out of the year. He loved attending his grandkids extracurricular activities in Maryland and Virginia. The grandkids loved grandpa’s stories of growing up in Montrose, and driving his parent’s bakery truck, and eating grandpa’s pancakes and dinners whenever they would visit.
A memorial service for John will be held Monday, December 2, 2024 at 10:30 AM in St John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N Bestgate Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401. Following the funeral service there will be a reception from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.
