Major John H. Helm, Sr (USMC, Ret), a longtime resident of Annapolis, Maryland died of heart failure on February 10, 2017 in his home. He was born on April 28, 1936 to parents Hugh and Hettie Helm in Henderson, KY. He grew up in Warren, Ohio and he attended Ohio State University. He held a B.S. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Computer Technology and Management from American University. He joined the Marine Corps in 1959, and he taught in the Math Department at the Naval Academy from 1965 until 1968. He served 13 months in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 and his bravery earned him many awards. As a decorated Veteran, he retired with honors after 21 years with the Marine Corps. He worked as a Computer Systems Analyst for CACI for 25 years until he retired at age 75. Throughout his life, John was an avid sports enthusiast as a multi-sport athlete in high school, coaching his children’s teams, and then following his grandchildren’s many sports activities. He enjoyed playing golf as well as league bowling for many years. John was preceded in death by his parents, and his two sisters Beverley and Dolores. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeny-Lynn Helm, one brother Hugh Helm, III of California, his children, Kimberly Cobb of Corydon, KY, CAPT John H. Helm, Jr. (USMC, ret), Janice M. Lawrence, James N. Helm, of Round Rock, TX., and Rosalie H. Madairy and their spouses,15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A private burial service will be held at the Crownsville Veteran's Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at the Doubletree Hotel, 210 Holiday Court, Annapolis, MD on February 22, 2017 at 12:30 PM.
