Hugh S. McKenna

Hugh McKenna, age 68, passed away on Saturday, March 28th in Annapolis of pneumonia and congestive heart failure. Born in Annapolis, he was a 1965 graduate of Annapolis Senior High School and worked for the Comptroller of the Treasury from 1965 to 2008. Hughie, as he was affectionately called, was not afraid to try anything. He played as a drummer in his youth and served briefly in the Maryland National Guard. He also served briefly as a Franciscan friar and was employed for a short time by the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a licensed small plane pilot and a strong advocate of the N.R.A. An avid weight lifter and runner, he was once called the “strongest man in Eastport under six feet tall.” Hughie loved animals, especially dogs and had Chesapeake Bay Retrievers since he was a boy. He was kind, caring, true, and humble. He always had a smile and time to listen. He was quite a jokester and could elicit laughter anytime. A devout Catholic, he was extremely religious and served as an adorer in the adoration chapel at St. Mary’s. He is survived by Judith “Judy” McKenna, his wife of 35 years, a sister, Joy McKenna of Colorado, and two stepdaughters, Caryn San Nicola of Annapolis and Lisa Yaw of Gaithersburg. Friends and family may call for a visitation on Monday, April 6th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00p m at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, Inc. 147 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD 21401. The funeral will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church 620 N. Bestgate Road on Tuesday, April 7th at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the SPCA at 1815 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403.
