David Porter Fogle

David was born May 4, 1929, in Lexington, Kentucky, son of Professors Dr. David Edgar Fogle and Mrs. Alice Porter Fogle. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and Princeton University in New Jersey, graduating with a BA in Architecture. He served four years in the US Navy and earned a Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of California.

His life was dedicated to public service and historic preservation. After serving as a Foreign Service Officer in Chile, Guatemala, and Brazil, he became a professor at the University of Maryland in the School of Architecture. There, he and his students assisted in the restoration of the 19th century Rossborough Inn for use as a University faculty club. Later restoration projects included the Chalfonte Hotel in Cape May, New Jersey, and Riversdale, the home of Lord Baltimore’s descendants, who founded the University of Maryland. He helped found the Maryland Study Center at Kiplin Hall, Yorkshire, England, the ancestral home of the Lords Baltimore.

David moved to Eastport in the 1990s. He was a member of the Eastport Yacht Club, the Cosmos Club in Washington, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, as well as an advisor to the Hammond Harwood House and Historic Annapolis. He was president of the Annapolis Preservation Trust and Special Assistant to the Mayor of Annapolis, Ellen Moyer, during her eight years in office. In 2016, David was designated a Living Landmark by the Annapolis Heritage Commission.

David is survived by his five nieces and nephews, and their spouses, children, and grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Eastport, on August 5th at 2pm, followed by a reception at the Eastport Yacht Club.
