Carmelita Faye Johnson

Born May 16, 1933, to Stanton Andrews and Jeanette Andrews of Hermon, Maine, Carmelita grew up in Hermon, with her siblings Sydney Andrews (deceased); Sandra Whittig of Hudson, Indiana; and Judith Smith of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Following graduation from Hermon High School in 1951, she completed a three year Nursing Program at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Upon graduation from nursing school, she became a Registered Nurse.

Through a nursing school classmate, Carmelita met Jack Johnson of Calais, Maine, a United States Air Force Airman stationed at Dow Field, in Bangor, Maine. They were married on May 12, 1956. As an Air Force wife, she followed her husband to numerous duty stations in Vermont, New York, South Carolina, Georgia, and Maryland. They raised two children, Scott R. Johnson of Ponte Vedra, Florida, born in 1957; and Brenda L. MacQuilliam of Crownsville, Maryland, born in 1960.

Throughout her forty plus years of nursing Carmelita held numerous staff nursing positions at hospitals near her husband’s duty stations. Her last position, prior to retirement in 1990, was as the Director of the Extended Care Facility at Prince Georges County Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland.

An avid crafter, Carmelita was an excellent cake decorator but is best remembered for her knitting and needlepoint skills. The family cherished her handmade gifts including sweaters and needlepoint-adorned Christmas stockings. She was also an excellent cook whose recipes have been collected, saved and passed down to the family.

Carmelita loved and adored her family that included four grandchildren: Andrew S. Johnson, Amanda L. Johnson, Wesley J. MacQuilliam, Matthew S. MacQuilliam, Kevin C. MacQuilliam: and her eleven great grandchildren: Summer Johnson, Miller Johnson, Connor MacQuilliam, Grant MacQuilliam, Cooper MacQuilliam, Henry MacQuilliam, Jack MacQuilliam, Lila MacQuilliam, Colt MacQuilliam, Benjamin MacQuilliam and Thomas MacQuilliam.

Services and interment will be private.
