Beatrice Martin Buchheister (“BC” – “BZ”) passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024 at Sunrise of Annapolis after being surrounded by family. Beatrice was born at the Naval Hospital Annapolis on October 20, 1938 and grew up at the house Capt. W.A.P Martin, her father, built at 2 St. Mary’s St. Annapolis. She attended St Mary’s, Annapolis, Eden Hall, Philadelphia and earned her BA from Newton College of Sacred Heart, (Boston College) Mass.
Prior to marriage, Miss Martin taught at Millersville Elementary School and specialized in Reading and Math.
As a young girl, BC enjoyed cruising the Yacht Basin, Annapolis Yacht Club, the Naval Academy and Bay Ridge with Charlotte, her sister, and close friends. She developed her love of the water on Spa Creek and the Severn River on her family’s skiff. Her love of the water would take her along the Intercoastal Waterway to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.
Beatrice married Brent Buchheister of Upper Marlboro. They raised three children- Gustav, Christopher and Katharine in Wardour. Their marriage ended in divorce. For many years, she worked as a clerk for Oden Bowie, Maryland’s Secretary of the Senate.
Later, BZ lived and traveled with the love of her life E. Lawrence "Laury” Dinning, III. Along with Hugo the Dachshund, they enjoyed and endless summer cruising and fishing aboard “Teetotaler” on the Chesapeake and Delaware in Summer and warm Florida waters in winter. BZ and Laury lived in Annapolis, Bethany Beach, Delaware and Ft Lauderdale, Florida and shared amazing adventures.
A passionate gardener with a green thumb and eye for color and visual design, BZ served as president of Wardour Garden Club and volunteered as a docent at the Hammond-Harwood House on Maryland Avenue. She was an active donor and supporter of the Christ Child Foundation.
One of her lasting influences passed to her children and grandchildren was the art of writing a kind and sincere thank-you note.
She was predeceased by her father Capt. W.A.P. Martin, USN (Ret.), mother Frances Dessez Furlong Martin, sister Charlotte Louise, and brother Christopher.
She is survived by her sons Gustav (Michele), Christopher (Bevin), and daughter Katharine. And grandchildren- Benjamin (Storrie) Crutchley, Dr. Robert (Jessica) Crutchley, Madeline Crutchley, Jennifer Crutchley, Ahren Buchheister, Courtney Buchheister, and Aiden Buchheister. And one Great Grand Daughter Beatrice Crutchley.
The family would like to thank the professional, compassionate, and loving care of the Staff at Sunrise of Annapolis and Heartland Hospice.
