Robert E. Meader, February 14, 1931 to July 30, 2022 of Ann Arbor, MI passed away after suffering a stroke at home. He was born to Elizabeth (Faeth) Meader and George Meader in Ann Arbor on Valentine’s Day.
Several fond memories he had were taking his Mom’s car downtown to celebrate V-E Day in 1945, riding his Whizzer Bike 550 miles from Rockland, MI in the Upper Peninsula to Ann Arbor when he was 15, running the elevator in the old House Office Building in Washington D.C. where he met many political figures while he earned his law degree from George Washington University. He was also a member of the 1950 and 1951 University of Michigan football teams and was invited to the M Club football alumni game day celebrations in his later years, which gave him great satisfaction. Bob married Nancy Anne Nungester in 1956 and they moved to Oklahoma City, OK where he served in the FBI as a special agent. In Oklahoma, they had their first son, Dave. They decided Ann Arbor was a good place to live and raise a family so they returned in 1958, and had two more sons, Bob was elected to Ann Arbor City Council and served as a 3rd ward councilman for 4 years. During that time they had two more sons, Rick and Randy. They lived first in Forestbrooke, then Burns Park, and finally off Earhart Road.
Bob was a good athlete, playing basketball and paddleball at the IM Building most Saturday mornings, but he particularly loved golfing at Barton Hills Country Club, at one point earning a 5 handicap. Presciently, he bought Masters Golf Tournament tickets in the early 1960s and was a lifelong fan of that tournament, sharing his tickets with friends if the family couldn’t go. He went to the tournament over 20 times.
Bob’s mom, Elizabeth, was born and raised in Aschauffenberg, Germany and he identified strongly with the German American community in Ann Arbor. He was a lifelong member of Schwaben Halle German American society, where his parents met in the 1920s.
Bob was also deeply committed to raising his family and made probably most of his professional decisions in order to provide a home that was healthy and safe for them all. He was a fun dad, playing football with the boys in the backyard and golf with them in Father-Son golf events. He and Nancy hosted countless family get-togethers – at home, at Metzger’s Restaurant, at German Park, at different rental cottages on Lake Michigan Up North, on vacations to the South during winter, as well as other trips to Arizona, California and Germany – keeping the family closely knit through the years.
Bob is survived by his wife Nancy; son Dave and his children Scott and Troy; son Rick and his wife Ellen and children Kate and Kristine; son Randy and his wife Kami and children Craig and Meghan; and his sister Kathy of Centreville, VA.
We love you Dad, and will miss you.
