Born and raised in Orlando, Florida, Rick graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor’s of Science in Geography and received his Masters of Science from Eastern Michigan University in GIS and pursued a career dedicated to the development of geospatial interpretation focusing first on watersheds and then on other environmental concerns.
In 2013 Rick joined the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan to serve as the business-technical liaison for the City's Community Services Area which included Building, Rental and Inspection Services, the Community Development Unit which delivered housing, economic development and human services to lower income city residents, and Parks & Recreation.
A true renaissance man, Rick enjoyed a diverse number of activities and studies with a particular passion for adventure motorcycling and sustainable agriculture.
Rick left us much too early on May 16, 2018 and is deeply missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his loving parents and children. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be offered to the Rick Powell, Jr. Memorial Scholarship.
