Linnie Ann Philpot, age 97, of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away July 18, 2024. Linnie was born April 22, 1927 to John and Fannie (Reid) Philpot, the fourth child of five, and one of eight children in total, including the three children from John and Julia (Howard) Philpot.
Linnie spent her early years in Heard County, where she attended Canaan Church School and East Depot School. Seeking better opportunities, she moved north and continued her education, ultimately earning a high school diploma from a school in Detroit, Michigan, and an associate degree from Washtenaw County Community College.
Her career spanned many years at the University of Michigan Hospital, where she started as an elevator operator and later became a LPN until her retirement.
Linnie's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She joined Canaan Baptist Church in Troup County, Georgia, at an early age. After relocating to Ann Arbor, Michigan, she became an active member of the Second Baptist Church. At Second Baptist, she sang in the senior choir, served as President of the Senior Citizens Organization, and contributed her skills as a nurse assistant and program planner. She was a dedicated member of the Sunday School and Prayer Meetings and participated in the African-American March.
Her commitment to community service was evident in her involvement with the Ann Arbor Community Service Center, where she held an official position. Linnie was also a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association and played a key role in establishing a Community Health Center at a local church.
Linnie's hobbies included sewing and reading, and she particularly enjoyed making quilts and other items for the African-American Arts and Crafts Fair. Her sense of civic duty was strong; she served as a poll worker during elections and even ran for City Council. She had the honor of attending the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.
Linnie was an avid traveler, exploring countries such as China, Egypt, Israel, and South Africa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, one brother, three sisters, and her adopted daughter. She leaves to cherish her memory: one sister, Janie Philpot; two brothers, Thomas Philpot and John (Mary) Philpot; nine nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; two great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and caretakers, Brenda Parker, Mary Philpot, Kirk and Gloria Jackson, and Mary Johnson.
Linnie Philpot's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love for her community and family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral Visitation will be held Monday, July 22, 2024 from 12:00pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 1:00pm at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. 4th Avenue, Ann Arbor. Burial will be held Monday, July 22, 2024 at 3:00pm at United Memorial Gardens, 4800 Curtis Road, Plymouth.
