Elizabeth Ann Katz

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Katz was born April 28, 1926 in Ypsilanti, MI, the third of five children, to Andrew and Emma Campbell. Her parents, older sisters, Garnet and Adele (Date) and a younger brother, Dan preceded her in death. Her youngest sister, Judy survives. Elizabeth married Arthur (Bud) Katz in 1945 and they were married for 62 years before he passed away in 2008. Their children, Leslie Feret (Kurt Fischer,) David Katz (Marcia,) and William Katz survive, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was, "Aunt Betty," to many beloved nieces and nephews, always cherishing the time spent with them and later her grandchildren, Ben and Eli Feret, who she took care of when their mother and father were working. When Betty and Date became young farm wives on opposite sides of Saline, they kept in constant touch by visits and phone and, with other local women, started a service/social organization, appropriately named, "The Fun Club." The Fun Club held euchre parties and other events to raise money for projects such as a new hospital being built in Saline. Many of the Fun Club members also volunteered for The March of Dimes which helped fund the new polio vaccine. Like many of her rural friends and neighbors, Betty was active in the Pittsfield Union Grange, taught Sunday School at her church and served at various times as room mother in her children's classroom. As years went on Betty lent her cheerful help to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor at their semi-annual rummage sales. Anyone close to her at that time might suddenly have found themselves pressed into service or, at very least, as the recipient of some curious treasure from the corner of 3rd and Washington Streets. With the primary help of her youngest son, Bill, and the wonderful care of Hospice of Lenawee County, Elizabeth was able to remain at home, which continued as the center of celebrations, holiday gatherings and a welcoming familiar base for an ever-widening family. Elizabeth passed peacefully from this life with her youngest and oldest children next to her. As to her wishes Elizabeth will be cremated with a graveside service at a later date.
