Joseph was born on March 19, 1950, in Madrid, Iowa to Frank and Julia (Polich) Mataya. He completed his education at Madrid High School in 1968, after which he pursued a degree in Pharmaceuticals at Drake University, graduating in 1973. On a memorable day in 1971, Joseph exchanged vows with Rebecca Allen and together they welcomed three beautiful children into their lives: John, Mandy, and Jennifer. Although their paths diverged after 37 years of marriage, the love they shared for their children endured.
In 1973, Joseph established and managed Joe's Pharmacy in Madrid, Iowa. After a fire incident, he demonstrated remarkable resilience by expanding the business and renaming it Mataya Drug. As the owner, he dedicated himself to serving the Madrid Home residents and the wider community of Madrid. Alongside his pharmacy work, Joseph found solace in the great outdoors, often indulging in fishing trips. Furthermore, he selflessly served as an EMT for the Madrid Fire Department, lending his skills and compassion to those in need.
Joseph leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of his three children: John (Sutton) Mataya, Mandy (Todd) Pietig, and Jennifer (Zach) Sawyer. His memory will also be cherished by his eight beloved grandchildren: Foster and Kai Mataya, Alex, Austin, and Maxton Pietig, as well as Chloe, Beckett, and Ashtyn Sawyer. He is survived by his caring sisters, Barb (Segelke) and Marcia (Mike) Pickell, as well as his brother, Mike Mataya. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and other siblings.
