Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Elkhart Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Ankeny Funeral Home, 1510 W. First Street.
Frederick Mally Hudson was born March 24, 1923 in Pocahontas, Iowa, the son of Fred M. and Anne E. (Weissinger) Hudson. Fred graduated from Pocahontas High School and continued his education at the University of Iowa before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force earning the rank First Lieutenant, and serving as a Navigator on a B-17 Bomber flying 35 combat missions over Germany until his honorable discharge in September 1945. Fred returned to the University of Iowa and completed his B.A. degree in 1948 before enrolling to Westminster Law School in Denver, Colorado.
Fred began his career as a self-employed practicing attorney in Denver, and sold real estate there for three years. Fred returned to Iowa and set up his own law practice in Rolfe, Iowa and was elected Pocahontas County Attorney from 1961 through 1966. Fred also held positions in the Trust Department for the Iowa Department of Revenue, was a Hearing Compliance Officer for the Iowa Department of Transportation, and an Administrative Law Judge with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.
Fred married the love of his life, Samantha on June 26, 1959. The couple made their home on a farm north of Alleman, Iowa in 1969 and raised their family before moving to Elkhart, Iowa eight years later.
Fred was a faithful member of Ankeny First United Methodist Church, Sigma Nu Fraternity, American Legion in Pocahontas, and served as past president of the 306th Bomb Group. He enjoyed traveling, attending bomb group reunions, going pheasant hunting, and was an avid supporter of Iowa Hawkeye football. Mostly he loved spending time with his family and attending his children’s activities.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Samantha; daughters, Anne Hudson of Altoona, and Sarah (Jeff) Brix of Ankeny; son, Bill (Sherlyn) Hudson of Ankeny; grandchildren, David Hamilton, Holly Hudson, and Samantha Hudson; and many step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James W. Hudson; and sisters, Constance A Deacon, and Susan J. Brichta.
