David M. Smith, 66, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m.- 3:45 p.m. with a rosary starting at 3:45 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Ankeny Funeral Home (1510 W. First Street Ankeny, IA 50023). Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 29, 2019, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. First Street Ankeny, IA 50021). Burial will follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart or the charity of your choice.
Dave was born August 12, 1952, in Des Moines, to John and Beverly (Haug) Smith. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 1970. Dave was united in marriage to Jody Hunke on April 29, 1978 in West Point, Nebraska. They have one son, Nathan. Dave worked for 30 years at John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny and then another 9 years for the Parks Maintenance Department for the City of Ankeny in his retirement.
Dave was a member of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus. Dave's favorite things to do were spending time with Jody, enjoying coffee watching the wildlife near the trees and creek in their backyard, walking on the beach and any time playing with his grandkids. He enjoyed landscaping projects, particularly finding "just one more special rock", swimming, bicycling, and dirt bike riding. When Nate was young he enjoyed coaching youth baseball and basketball. Dave and Jody liked traveling, most recently on trips to Israel, Florida, and Hawaii. His special travel memories include family trips to the National Parks.
Dave is survived by his wife, Jody Smith; son, Nate (Meredith) Smith of Melbourne, Florida; two grandchildren: Kiley and Brody Smith; father, John W. Smith Jr. of Johnston; siblings: Linda Madison, John Steven Smith, Lorri (Ray) Smajd and Bob Smith, along with many nieces and nephews; he is also survived by his father-in-law, Gerald Hunke. He is preceded in death by his mother, Beverly, step-mother, Pauline Gaskill-Smith and mother-in-law, Marlyn Hunke
