William (Bill) Sidney Barrie, age 91, passed away Thursday, June 6, in Ames, Iowa. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held Saturday, June 15, at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St, Ames. Visitation is 1pm-3pm with family sharing at 2pm.
Bill was a lifelong resident of rural Gilbert, living in a family century home with his loving wife, Marilyn (York), high school sweethearts blessed with 69 years of marriage together and two children, Connie and Dale.
Bill was born June 28, 1932 in Ames, Iowa to James and Lillian (Streigel) Barrie. He learned to love country life, growing up on the farm with his 4 siblings. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1950 and was united in marriage to Marilyn on August 6, 1954.
Farming was Bill's "hobby", raising hogs, cattle, and broiler chickens. As with any good farmer, there were always fences to fix, hay to bale, and wood to cut. He valued being a good neighbor and was always there to help others and share his quick wit and humor!
Bill loved family time, nature, and wildlife. Barrie's Timber became a favorite camp for scouts to create experiences and memories. After Bill's retirement from ISU, he and Marilyn enjoyed their grandchildren's activities, volunteering and traveling, especially with Ritland Bus Tours, logging thousands of miles throughout the US exploring new places.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter Connie (Bob) Terrones; son Dale (Pat) Barrie; grandchildren BJ(Sari) Terrones, Karl (Colbi) Terrones, Barb (Chris) Painter, Missy Barrie, and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John Robert (Leda) Barrie, James Nelson (Sheila) Barrie, Berniece (Bill) McLaughlin, and S. Maxine (Keith) Lee.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Northridge Village and Suncrest Hospice for their compassion and care they gave Bill during this past year.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Gilbert Education Foundation, 103 Mathews Dr., Gilbert, IA, 50105, designated special project gift honoring William Barrie.
