On Sunday, July 24, 2022, Steven Alfred Hagen, age 74, died at his home in Ames, Iowa. He passed away peacefully in his sleep following a 13-year battle with Alzheimer's. A visitation for Steve will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2022, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. and burial of ashes at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Steve was a lifelong resident of Ames, Iowa, where he was born on May 1, 1948, to Alfred and Gladys (Anderson) Hagen. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1967-1970, and was stationed in Thailand. After returning to Ames, he worked as a lab tech in the Materials Lab at the Iowa Dept. of Transportation until his retirement in 2008. While working at the DOT, he also attended Des Moines Area Community College where he met Beverly Wood in one of his classes. They married soon after graduation in 1973 and made their home in Ames until Steve's death.
Steve was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, American Legion, Ames Isaac Walton League, a Life Member of the NRA, and a Charter Member of the Hawkeye Knife Collectors. He enjoyed the camaraderie at the gun and knife shows and traveled around the country to attend them. In his younger days, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In later years, he enjoyed lunch and activities at the Heartland Senior Center and the Heartland Adult Care Center until COVID-19 forced it to close in March 2020.
Steve is survived by Beverly (Wood) Hagen, his wife of 49 years; their two children, Stacy (Adam) Sanford and Scott Hagen; and one granddaughter, Samantha Sanford. He is also survived by his sister, Sandy (Ron) Risdal; his brother, Joel Hagen; and two sisters-in-law, Sharon (Ron) McCargar and Vona (Larry) Currier. Lastly, Steve is survived by his loyal and beloved feline assistant, Mickey. He was preceded in death by his parents.
