Arnold Dean “Pete” Drake, 84, former longtime resident of Ames, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, in Las Vegas, Nev., of complications after a fall in October. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., in Ames. Burial will follow at the Sheldahl Cemetery.
Dean was born June 10, 1926, in Madrid, Iowa, one of 10 children of William and Elsie (Stevens) Drake. He attended Sheldahl High School and served two years in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He married Betty Louise Brown on May 19, 1948, and had one son, Rodney.
Dean served as a security guard for the Atomic Energy Commission at Iowa State University, then moved to the Ames Police Department (1952-61) before becoming Deputy County Sheriff of Story County under Ivan Shelley (1961-71). From 1971 to 1987, Dean was Chief of Security for Iowa State University, before semi-retiring and moving to Las Vegas, Nev.
In Las Vegas, Dean worked for Binion’s Horseshoe Hotel and Casino and The Meadows School before full retirement in 1991. Up until his recent fall and decline in health, Dean did handyman work and assistance for a number of grateful people across the Las Vegas valley.
Dean is survived by his son, Rodney, and daughter-in-law, Marilyn, of Las Vegas; sisters, June Anderson, of Madrid, Donna Nall, of Slater, Fran Drake, of Indianola, and Joyce Tingley, of Sweetwater, Tenn.; brother, Robert “Bud” Drake, of Polk City; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his parents; brothers, Darrell and Bill; and his sisters Velma Moore, Viola Carlson and Betty Nervig.
