Don loved others well. He was a generous and faithful man by any standard. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, and to many a dear, dear friend. And all who knew him, loved him fiercely in return. Born on January 6, 1933, in Colorado City, Texas, he was married to his beloved Patsy Ann “Pat” Daughtrey for over 59 years, from January 1953 until her passing in April of 2012. He worked for Duke Electric for more than 67 years where, as a master electrician, he was known to still scale towers up until the age of 80. He’d also gladly let you know with a twinkle in his eye that stopping the practice was not his idea. His top position at Duke Electric was as Superintendent and he was planning to retire on his 90th birthday, which would have been this week. Not one to ever sit still for long, Don also enjoyed getting out into the wild and finding adventure, especially with his church men’s group where he would study the Word with men he respected, while also finding time to hike, rappel, or just enjoy the great outdoors. When not helping to sharpen other men at his church, he loved to sharpen his mind with books and by attending local theater with friends.
Don is preceded in death by his wife, Pat Daughtrey, his parents O. and Ora Vida Vines Daughtrey, his brothers Larry and Arvel Daughtrey, his son, Terry Daughtrey, his grandson, C. R. Daughtrey, and his niece Sarah Guest Strasser.
He is survived by his grandson Aaron Lee Daughtrey, his sister Sarah Jan Daughtrey Guest, and his nieces and nephews: Carrie Daughtrey, Sharon Cavitt, Gary Daughtrey, Matthew Guest, and Robin Guest.
Visitation will take place on Friday, January 6, 2023, from 5-7 PM at Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors. A memorial service will be at Washington Avenue Christian Church at 2 PM on Saturday, January 7.
