Carrie Adele Chism, 60, of Amarillo, Texas passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022, after a six-year battle with heart issues.
Carrie was born May 19, 1961 to Albert S. Chism, an ordained minister and U.S. Marine, and his wife Lillian (James) Chism in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She graduated from Caprock High School in 1979, and immediately began an earnest pursuit in healthcare. She attended EMT and Firefighter training in Connecticut while married to high school sweetheart Howard C. Herm, who served in the Navy. On return to Amarillo, she attended the Paramedic Degree Program at Amarillo College graduating with Honors in 1989. She served in the U.S. Navy Reserve during the Desert Shield/Desert Storm era, attaining the rank of Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Petty Officer. She served as Lead Petty Officer (LPO) of 3 clinics and also attended Marine Corps Field Medical Service School in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1991 she pursued a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas graduating in 1993. Carrie then practiced professionally at (then) Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas as an ICU Nurse Intern. After 10 years, she moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area where she served as Nursing House Supervisor with Kindred (7) Hospital System. Later, she practiced Advanced Level Home Health as a Senior Field Nurse, Educator, and Director of Clinical Services. Carrie was a member of: American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, Orthodox Jewish Nurses Association, Society of American Registered Nurses, Sigma Theta International Honor Society for Nursing, and an American National Red Cross Registered Nurse.

Her faith and strength rested totally on the Almighty G-d of Israel.
Above all, Carrie loved her family and friends taking every opportunity possible to be with them. Nothing gave her greater happiness than being a close friend to others. She was predeceased by her grandparents Homer S. and Libby (Martin) Chism, and Claude and Luvina (Standefer) James, her father Albert S. Chism, and brother Albert S. Chism, Jr., known as “Sid.”
Carrie is survived by her Mother Lillian M. Chism Jenkins of Amarillo, eldest son H. Benjamin Herm and wife Berenice of Amarillo, and their sons H. Joshua, Abram, Jonathan, and Timothy; her youngest son Joshua David Herm and his wife Kimberly of San Diego, and their children Elijah, Abigail, and Samantha. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Leah and Mike Fort; her niece, Sydney (Fort) Clark and husband Chase; nephew, Lane Fort and wife, Neeley; and seven great nephews & nieces Benjamin, Bowen, Norah, Gracelyn, Merritt, Emma, and Viviann. She is survived by her children’s father, Howard C. Herm, as well as many lifelong friends, including D-Nan Busby Fink (since 2nd Grade), Valerie McGinnis, Lorraine Wellman, and Elvis Buffong.
Carrie’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to her home health nurse, Valerie, the nurses & staff at BSA Hospice, and to Carrie’s neighbor and friend, Teresa Tucker, for their diligent care and support.
A graveside service with Military Honors is planned for 3:00 pm, Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 6969 East Interstate 40, Amarillo, Texas 79118. The family will receive visitors between 5:00 pm & 7:00 pm, Monday evening. In lieu of flowers, Carrie requested memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
