Bennie L. Mitchell, 75 of Amarillo passed away March 2, 2014. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel with Mr. Kerry Arnold officiating. Entombment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell. Bennie was born November 7, 1938 in Bastrop County, Texas to William and Willie Mae Mitchell. He joined the U.S. Navy out of high school and was honorably discharged after 4 years. He then spent a couple of years in the U.S. Army Reserves and was also honorably discharged. Bennie worked at the Smelter Plant here in Amarillo for several years and then at Texaco before working for many years and retiring from the Celanese Plant in Pampa. He was a member of Georgia St. Church of Christ and his church family was very important to him. He even filled in as Pastor at the church whenever he was needed and he gave a great service each time he was called upon. Bennie was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather and he will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Erma Washington Mitchell; grandson, Ja’Vante Mitchell; brothers, Henry “H.C”, Grant, John and Archie Mitchell and sisters, Bertha Jones, Clara Halverd and Alma Young. Bennie is survived by his wife, Erma Mitchell of the home; sons, Bennie Mitchell, Jr. of Houston and Samuel Mitchell of Amarillo; daughter, Donna Mitchell Jones of Amarillo; sisters, Lula Hunter and husband Johnny of Tucson, Arizona and Laura Mitchell and husband Leslie of Austin; grandchildren, Donnie King, Jr., Joy Washington White, Jaqurion Mitchell, Elijah Mitchell and Te’asia Mitchell; also by 8 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be made to Georgia St. Church of Christ, 5709 S. Georgia or to American Cancer Society, 3915 S. Bell.
