Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Cooper Dayton, 42, a native of Woodbridge, VA, passed away on November 24, 2016. He was a 23-year veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a member of an elite Navy Special Operations community known as Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD). Senior Chief Dayton was highly regarded by his peers, deploying multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and received multiple awards, including two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart Medal. At the time of his death, he was attached to a forward-deployed special operations unit in Syria in support of Combined Joint Task Force, Operation Inherent Resolve.
Scott was predeceased by his parents Henry and Helen Dayton. He is survived by his wife Kristin, daughter Hailey, son Cole, aunt Kathy Lane, cousins Rebecca and Tommy Lane, uncle Gary Dayton, aunt Jane Dayton, cousins Eric Dayton and Jennifer Barucci and husband Chris Barucci, best friends and brothers Francisco Wonpat and Andrew Wonpat as well as the brothers and sisters of the steadfast Navy EOD community.
Scott will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Friday, December 9 at 1600 at The Wave Church, 1000 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 14 from 1200 to 1400 at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA. Funeral services for Scott will be held at Christ Church 118 North Washington Street, Alexandria, VA at 1600. A reception will take place immediately following. Interment will occur at Arlington National Cemetery on December 15 at 0900. Please arrive no later than 0800.
Scott’s family would like to thank their family, friends, neighbors and military community for the outpouring of love and support. His loss was felt deeply by those who have known and cared for him. Scott has long been viewed as a hero by his family and friends and a fearless warrior by his EOD brothers and sisters. He truly made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and will be greatly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the EOD Warrior Foundation will be greatly appreciated.
