Virginia Owens Sibley was born in Warren, Arkansas on September 7, 1926. She passed away on February 16, 2024, at the age of 97. She was the eleventh of twelve children born to the late Dock Owens and Ophelia Evans Owens. She was preceded in death by her parents and eleven siblings and her beloved husband, Leander Sibley of 58 years.
Virginia spent her early childhood in Monticello, Arkansas where she attended Drew County High School. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age with the Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. W.K. King, Sr.
She met Leander Sibley who was president of the senior ushers and after one year they married on May 28, 1955. She was the personal assistant for Actress Marjorie Rambo for many years and in June of 1961 Virginia’s relocated to Duarte, California for her new job at Hope Medical Center in the Dept of Biology.
In February 1951 Virginia moved to Los Angeles, California and united with the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Rev H.B. Charles, Sr. pastor. She was a member of the sanctuary choir. Being faithful to the Baptist doctrine she united with the Second Baptist Church, Monrovia, California under the leadership of Rev. G.G. Bailey, pastor. She was a Senior Usher, Supervisor of the Jr. Ushers, a member of the Sunday school, mission and Union Usher Board of California Southern District, Western State Convention.
Virginia retired in 1988 and she and Leander moved to Little Rock to be closer to her oldest sister. She was united with the Longley Baptist Church, Rev. Mitchell L. Moore. She served as President of the was Senior Usher Board, Jr. usher’s instructor, president of the Gospel Choir, Sunday School and mission. On November 24, 1996, she united with the St. Mark Baptist Church, Bishop Steven Arnold, Senior Pastor. She served in the following ministries, Sunday School, Senior Choir, Willie Wiley Bible Class, Raven by the Brook Ministry, and bereavement minister as a cook. Because of her age Virginia reunited with Longley Baptist Church to be near home, Rev. Dwight D. Townsend is the Senior Pastor.
A Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00PM at Pinecrest Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held Friday at 1:00PM at Virginia’s home church, Longley Baptist.
