Meliton Avalos III, affectionately known as "Mighty Milt," passed away on March 21, 2025, in Sun City West, Arizona, after a courageous and inspiring battle with ALS that spanned 14 years. He was born on February 20, 1965, in Ajo, Arizona, where he grew up cultivating friendships and memories that would last a lifetime.
Milt's early years were vibrant and full of promise. He graduated from Ajo High School in 1983, where he was not only a proud youth athlete but also flourished as Homecoming King in 1982. Milt's passion for sports shone through his accolades as a wrestling champion and standout football player, earning him admiration for his strength and resilience. He was known for his infectious smile, unwavering positivity, and deep faith—qualities that inspired everyone who crossed his path. He was also an organ donor which showed his value in serving other people.
His professional life was marked by 25 years of dedicated service as an Information Technology Specialist for the Arizona Department of Transportation. Milt was a beloved figure among his colleagues, recognized for his unyielding support and encouragement, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and teamwork.
Milt was a devoted family man, leaving behind a legacy of love and warmth. He is survived by his father, Meliton N Avalos Jr.; his brother, Daniel (Stephanie) Avalos, his sister, Carol (Randy) Wells, and his other brother Anthony Childs; his beloved sons, Austin and Eric Avalos; as well as cherished family members Julie, Patrick, and Travis Wells, and Andrea and Lexi, who he held dearly as honorable children. His family was his heart, and they will forever carry his memory with pride.
He also had the unwavering support of Lilian Higman and Danny Armenta, his faithful caregivers for eight years, who provided compassion and companionship during some of his most difficult times.
Milt was preceded in death by his mother, Cruzita Avalos, and his brother, Ernie Childs. Their memories will forever remain intertwined with his, lighting the way for those who mourn his passing.
A rosary will be held at Ajo-Douglass Funeral Home on April 11, 2025, at 7:00 PM, followed by a Mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on April 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM. He will find his final resting place in Ajo Cemetery, where a graveside service will be held at 11:15 AM on the same day.
Milt leaves behind a legacy that speaks to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of family, friendship, and faith. His journey through life touched many, and he will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
