Rowena Cook Baker McIlroy, 94, passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at a local nursing center in Abilene. Funeral services will be 2:00p.m., Saturday, October 20, 2012 in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory St., with burial following in Truby Cemetery near Anson. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 to 7p.m. at the funeral home.
Rowena was born on October 22, 1917 to George Nathan and Julia Etta Ely Cook in Lea County, New Mexico. She came to the Truby/Anson area in a covered wagon when she was a small child. Rowena attended school in Truby and later married John L. “Pete” Baker in 1938. He passed away in 1944. She then married Oscar Leo McIlroy and he passed away in 1973.
Rowena was a homemaker and a longtime member of Hamby Baptist Church. She loved gardening, being outdoors, fishing and riding horses.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, John L. Baker and her second husband, Oscar Leo McIlroy; twin sister, Ruth Cook who died at birth; two other sisters, Maude Watts and Virginia Gilbert; and two brothers, Howard Cook and W.L. Cook.
Survivors include her son, C.A. McIlroy of Abilene; her daughter, Julia Baker of Abilene; two sisters, Anna Lanell Caffey and Gertrude De Rusha both of Abilene; brother-in-law, O.D. McIlroy and wife, Sybil of Springfield, Missouri; sister-in-law, Mary Nell McIlroy of Dallas; granddaughter, Shannon Wester and husband, Michael; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Kay Wester; and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff of Hendrick Hospice, the employees at the Oaks at Radford Hills nursing home, and especially to Vivian Bamberg for all the many hours and hours of devoted care and assistance of Rowena. Also a special thanks to Fonda Caffey, who taught Rowena how to love the Earth and nature more with a special attention to butterflies.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory St., Abilene, TX 79601.
