June Engels Davis, 89, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013, in Abilene, TX. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Glen Cove Cemetery, Talpa, TX with Dr. Bill Witt officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St., Abilene, Texas.
June was born on June 13, 1924 in Middlebury, Indiana to the late George and Addie Thomas Engels. In her early years June attended a two-room schoolhouse, Pleasant Hill Grade School, until high school, where she attended Wheaton Community High School, graduating in 1942. June enjoyed being a cheerleader and could still remember and do her cheers up into her 70's. During World War II, June worked for the Simpson Electric Co. in Chicago, IL, before the family moved to Tucson. In 1943, while living in Tucson, she worked for the Porters Sporting Goods and the U. S. Naval Censorship. She was a life time member of Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition, she was a homemaker and loved to cook. June was a lifelong Methodist who also loved her flower garden and was well known for her gardenias.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 50 years, H. N. Davis; brothers, Charles and George Engels; and two sisters, Patience Fiedler and Gloria Johnson.
Survivors include her sons, Hank Davis and wife, Sylvia of View, TX and Kit Davis of Abilene; a daughter, Karen Witt and husband, Dr. Bill Witt of White Hall, AR; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; other family members, Eddie and Maggie Palmer, Bobby and Betsy Davis, Virginia Engels; and numerous nieces and nephews. She had a special love for two close friends, Novella Gilbreath and Lucille Byars.
The family wishes to give special thanks to her home health angel, Shay Jones.
We are grateful for her wisdom, generosity, caring, and encouragement. Her passing has left a hole in our hearts and she will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Glen Cove Cemetery Association, 578 CR 446, Talpa, TX 76882 or to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory St., Abilene, TX 79601.
