David Franklin Scott was born on January 8, 1943, in Sodus, New York. He was the 4th of 5 children born to the late William Arthur Scott and Mabel Virginia (Thomas) Scott. He was raised in a loving Christian home in LeRoy, New York. His parents worked hard to create a very nurturing and close-knit extended family that provided an environment where David had no idea he lacked material items while growing up.
After graduating from LeRoy High School in 1962, David joined the United States Air Force. In 1963, while stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, David met the love of his life. While attending Sunday morning service at Wesley United Methodist Church, he saw Audrey Louise Morrison singing in the choir, and the rest was history. They married at Kelly Air Force Base Chapel on October 1, 1964. They went on to have a family of four children that traveled and lived stateside in Rome & Utica, New York, Oklahoma, and Illinois, as well as abroad in Berlin, Germany, and Aviano, Italy, as a military family. In 1981, TSgt. David Franklin Scott, USAF, completed his 22-year military career at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, and the family settled in Abilene.
Upon retirement, David began a civilian career as a regional manager with West Texas Utilities, now AEP, where he worked for 20 years. He was highly active in the community and sat on the board of Hendrick Medical Center. He also volunteered actively with Meals on Wheels of Abilene, The Lions Club, Hospice Care, and the Junior Achievement program through the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. He so believed in the future of the Abilene community that he ran for a seat on the Abilene ISD school board in 1999 - sadly, he fell short but was not discouraged. David was also a true patriot who deeply respected the flag, as he would place flags in yards for veteran holidays for those who were less abled. Later in life, David’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a Holiday Hills Baptist Church member and then of Southwest Park Baptist Church. He loved sharing the love of Jesus with others.
David will be remembered as a strong, faithful, and kind man who appreciated all his blessings, especially his family. He supported his children as a baseball and football little league coach and as an unofficial Abilene High School cheerleader, where he could be found leading chants in the crowd under the Friday night lights. He enjoyed playing golf, playing Cribbage, staying tech savvy and hooking up things around the house, serving the community, expressing his love for his family, eating at Whataburger, and indulging in apple pie. Some of his most treasured moments included celebrating the accomplishments of all his children and grandchildren, hosting his grandkids each summer at “Camp Scott,” touring Disney World with the family for Thanksgiving 2017, and showing off his birthplace and sharing his childhood memories in New York with his children. He was devoted to his family, and in the words of his grandchildren, "he was the best grandpa ever."
David was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Gary, Dennis, and Sylvia.
David leaves to cherish his wife of 60 years, Audrey Scott of Abilene; his children, Monica Scott of Abilene, Gary Scott (Ashley) of The Woodlands, TX, David Scott (Rhonda) of Chicago, IL, and Sonya Harper (Melvin) of Denton, TX; his grandchildren Harris, Waverly, Ethan, Hayden, Houston, Bryson, and Ella; his oldest brother, Bill Scott of California; his brothers and sister-in-law, Norman, Robert, Leon, and Annie Mae Morrison; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
To honor David's legacy, please make memorial contributions in his name to Meals on Wheels of Abilene, the Food Bank of West Texas, or the Boys and Girls Club of Abilene.
A memorial service for Mr. Scott will be held Friday, December 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, TX 79606.
