A love affair that began in a snowstorm in Nova Scotia lasted more than 35 years before ending on Christmas Eve in British Columbia, when Rani Jean Morris, beloved mother, daughter, sister and wife, passed on after a 12-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Rani attended Acadia University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1987 and made lifelong friends. She met her husband Peter while both were attending Acadia and they began dating in third year, after Peter piggybacked Rani home through a snowstorm.
Rani was born September 2, 1965 in Halifax to Valija Aunins and Douglas Butcher. She grew up in Dartmouth, N.S. and graduated from Dartmouth High in 1983. As a child, Rani spent her time running the canteen at St. George’s Tennis Club and hanging out at her mom’s dental practice across from Sullivan’s Pond.
Rani attended nursing school at the Victoria General Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1990.
Rani and Peter were married on April 6th, 1991 in Windsor, N.S. A few days later they drove to the west coast and settled in Mission, B.C., where they stayed.
Rani began her nursing career in maternity at MSA hospital, and also worked in long-term care for years at Tabor Home before teaching the LPN program at Sprott Shaw College. Later she became a case manager with Fraser Health.
Rani and Peter had two children, Mollie and Luke. Rani was a fiercely loving, proud, and caring parent. She filled her children’s lives with spontaneity and fun.
Rani loved to be active and spent most of her spare time outdoors, at the gym or cooking new recipes. She was passionate about nature and animals, and particularly loved her pets, who she spoiled every day with walks and home-cooked meals. She had eclectic tastes and was a fan of everything from Lord of the Rings to long shopping trips. Rani particularly loved trips to the ocean, and her favourite and most frequented destinations were Parksville, Cannon Beach and Hawaii.
Rani was predeceased by her mother, Dr. Valija Aunins. She is survived by her husband, Peter Morris; her children Mollie (Adam Ehler) and Luke (Maddie Neumann); her father Douglas Butcher; and her sisters Jana Miller and Heidi Aunins.
