Neil MacEwan, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on May 25, 2024, in Abbotsford, BC, at the age of 87. Born on August 11, 1936, in Windsor, Ontario, Neil's life was marked by love, faith, and a passion for learning.
Neil is survived by his cherished wife, Patricia MacEwan (Safrance), his daughters Mary Jean McMahon (son-in-law Robert McMahon), Heather Neufeld (son-in-law Larry Neufeld), and his grandchildren Kellyn, David and Natalie, brothers in law Charlie Safrance (Bernie) and John Safrance (Laurie) as well as many nieces and nephews. Neil is predeceased by his brother Don MacEwan (wife Ann, daughter Karen Wilson), his sister in law Joyce MacKenzie (Peter) and brother in law Gordon Safrance (Mary). He was a ready source of strength and support for his family.
A devout follower of Jesus, Neil's spiritual journey began in his mid-30s when he dedicated himself to a life of daily prayer and Bible study. His fascination with the intersection of faith and science led him to explore the intricate mathematical and physics principles that reflect God's creative order in the universe.
Neil was a proud Windsor native, having attended Patterson Collegiate as a student before embarking on a distinguished career as a mathematics teacher. He taught at Patterson, Herman, and Vincent Massey High Schools, where Neil's passion for mathematics was evident in his dedication to his students students, creativity in the classroom and lesson plans, with his colleagues, and on curriculum, even writing a book.
Summers at the family cottage on Lake Fletcher were a highlight for Neil and his wife, Pat. With family and many friends they built their retreat cottage from the ground up. This place over the years created many cherished memories. Neil's knack for craftsmanship was showcased in his numerous building projects, including the construction of his own ski boat, which provided endless hours of enjoyment for family and friends on the lake.
Throughout his life, Neil remained profoundly grateful for God's grace and mercy. He found solace in the belief that God's forgiveness was manifest through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. His gratitude for life's blessings was deep, and he often expressed thankfulness for the simple joys shared with loved ones.
Neil's legacy of faith, love, and intellectual curiosity will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered fondly for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to his family and his faith.
Neil's Celebration of Life service will be held in Abbotsford BC at the Life Center on June 23. The link to watch it will be available below at 3 PM Pacific time on that day.
