Family was shocked to be informed of Mike’s death from a heart attack while he was hiking the highlands of Scotland. He loved to venture into new places, so died doing what he loved. Those missing him at home are his beloved life partner of 41 years, Maple Melder; oldest son Josh, his wife Marnie, and their children Malakhi and Sophia; daughter Amanda and her son Noah; and younger son Calvin.
Mike was a Civil / Structural Engineer since 1985, studying at UC Berkeley and working in California for 10 years. When he returned to Canada he worked for various local and international companies, most recently as a Specialist Engineer for BC Hydro.
Mike was an adventurer, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain climbing while trekking through many different countries of the world, loving his majestic Rockies the most. He was proud to share this love of the outdoors with others, taking his oldest son and oldest grandson on a 7-day trek of the West Coast Trail. He loved gadgets, gear, and technology, and was an inventor, having just recently patented one of his inventions. He was a person of faith, valuing the complexity and simplicity of creation.
It was always an adventure to go places with Mike. He took the high road to Loch Lomond and is now discovering the bonnie banks of heaven.
