A loving tribute to the memory of the beautiful soul that was Joseph Paul Ashmall who was born on October 22, 1959 in Toronto, Ontario, and called home to the Lord on July 9, 2024 in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Joe led an adventure-filled life, filled with laughter and joy, but his greatest peace came from being near the ocean, or in a forest of trees.
As a youth Joe learned to ice skate, and joined a hockey team, where he quickly became known as the worst player on his team. It wasn’t until he stepped into the goalie crease that he found his niche, a niche so perfect for him, that eventually, he was approached by an NHL farm team. Even then, Joe knew he couldn’t maintain the grueling schedule; thus, he declined the offer.
As a child, his father often took him to the racetrack to watch thoroughbred horses. It was this early exposure that taught Joe how to see movement, strengths and weaknesses, enabling his career as an assistant trainer. As an assistant trainer, Joe had the opportunity to travel to Delaware and Florida with his beloved horses. This led him to a long road of working at racetracks, first as a pari-mutuel clerk, then as a simulcast operator.
Joe was fascinated with the history of Philadelphia, including Benjamin Franklin, visiting Independence Hall, even touching the Liberty Bell. Of course, this included the Flyers, and the Eagles, staying a loyal fan no matter how long their losing streak may last.
Joe always found a way to live near the ocean, whether it be the Atlantic or the Pacific, where he would often be found with a fishing pole in his hands. The sounds and smells of the ocean brought peace and serenity to Joe’s soul.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Marika. Stepson Geoffrey and Melissa Golombek and family of Buffalo, New York. Stepdaughter Katherine Golombek and Anthony Solotes and family of Lockport, New York. An Aunt, Margaret and Peter Wride of Michigan. Cousins Bryan Wride of Michigan and Joseph and Mary Ashmall and family of Scotland. He is predeceased by his parents George and Pauline Ashmall of Toronto, as well as several aunts and uncles.
Joe will forever and always be missed, living in the heart of those who loved him.
