Annie Funk, affectionately known as "Aunt Annie," was born on June 12, 1927, in Molochna, Southern Russia, to Cornelius and Susie Funk. She is predeceased by siblings Betty, Corny, and Henry, and survived by Susie, Dorothy, and Art. Her family's early escape from political upheaval brought them to Yarrow, BC, where they established deep community roots. A committed Christian from a young age, Annie was baptized at age 12 and grew into a woman of many talents and immense compassion.
Annie's academic journey took her from Tabor College to the University of British Columbia, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She dedicated her career to Social Services in Vancouver, particularly in Children’s Aid, where she touched many lives with her pragmatic yet tender approach to care.
Aunt Annie's life was a tapestry of service and storytelling. Whether helping her siblings, contributing at church, or aiding strangers along the way, she lived by the motto: “How can I help?” Her stories, from rescuing and raising an orphan duck, to saving a friend from the Vedder River, to navigating social challenges with humor and grit, all highlighted her mischievous wit and profound empathy.
Annie also had a flair for fashion, a skill she honed at the Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design. Her talent as a seamstress made her a cherished figure in her community, dressing brides and bridal parties, ensuring everyone felt beautiful.
In her later years, despite challenges, Annie's spirit remained undiminished. She retained her sharp wit, often reminiscing about past adventures and the deep faith that guided her through life. Her legacy of love, resilience, and service leaves an indelible mark on all who knew her.
As we remember Aunt Annie, we celebrate her journey from a tumultuous start to a life richly lived. Her stories, love, and faith continue to inspire us. Aunt Annie, you are deeply missed but eternally cherished.
A celebration of life for Elsie will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC V2T2X5.
