Al was the devoted husband of Velia Norton; loving father of Anita DePoe (sp. Mark DePoe), Cathy Pietras, and Michael Norton (sp. Michelle Norton); loving grandfather of Alison Mier (sp. Greg Mier), Caitlin Bruen (sp. Shawn Bruen), Autumn Pietras, Jared DePoe, and Tyler Norton; loving great-grandfather of Luke Mier, Oliver Bruen, and Quentin Bruen; and beloved brother of Richard Norton (sp. Sherilyn Norton). He is preceded in death by his parents Charles G. Norton and Amelia Norton (nee’ Baker) and siblings George Norton, Charles Norton, Edward Norton, Mary Wilcox, and Carmelita Lekan. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Al was a resident of Henderson, NV for 46 years and attended church in Henderson at the parish of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. His hometown was Yuma, AZ where the Norton family has a long history in the area going back to the 1800s.
Al faced every challenge in life with admirable strength and courage. One of the most genuine souls, his words were golden and there were never any empty promises. Our father was a giving and stalwart man who worked tirelessly to ensure that his family had everything they needed. He served in the U.S. Navy and then began his civilian career working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Arizona, California, Texas, and Nevada. He retired from the Bureau of Reclamation after working for them for 35 years.
Forever a golf enthusiast, he spent many happy hours out on the golf course and enjoyed time by the ocean sight-seeing in Hawaii and visiting family on the coasts of California and Oregon.
Early in life, our father learned the importance of hard work and he instilled that same work ethic in us. He was always there for us, whether we needed help with our homework or just a shoulder to cry on. He was a man of strong faith, and he taught us the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right.
Our father was a true role model to whom we will always look up. The funeral service will be held in Yuma, AZ at Johnson Mortuary & Desert Lawn Memorial Park on June 24, 2024, with a rosary scheduled for 9:00 a.m., followed by the eulogy and graveside service at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Father, you are now at peace, but you will live on forever in our hearts. We love you so much.
Rest in peace.
