Richard went to Iowa State University and received bachelor’s degrees in physics and electrical engineering and a master’s degree in industrial education. He was a professor at ISU teaching in the field of measurement. Later, he worked for Motorola in Phoenix, Arizona, where he evaluated semiconductor materials using nondestructive techniques involving optical interferometry. His favorite hobby was woodworking; he created many cabinets, bookshelves, and a sailboat. When he ran out of projects at home, he particularly enjoyed helping neighbors with their handyman projects.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Mary Stevens and Barbara “Bobbie” Unger.
Richard is survived by his wife of 74 years, Marilyn Winfrey Unger. He is also survived by their four children, Rich (Suzanne), Cliff, Susan (Peggy) and Julie (John), four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
