Her last words were “The world needs to know Jesus.” Lucy went to be with Him, closing her eyes at 7:11am, Tuesday, December 27th.
A proud lifelong resident of Yonkers, Lucy joins her loving husband Thomas Roy Smith, who served as a Captain in the Yonkers Fire Department. She also joins her mother and father who immigrated to the US from Poland in 1921, her sister Alice Johnson and two brothers Joseph & Stephen Kalata who. like Lucy, served our country proudly in WWII. Lucy also had a brother Stanley who died before she was born.
Lucy’s wish was to remain in her home, that she and Tom built and her family made that possible. She was a mother and mother-in-law who never gave advice but always showed up. She was among the first to visit Europe in the ‘60’s and went backpacking in Thailand when she was 90. Every Christmas Eve, following the church service, she would join her son and family to drive through the night to Florida and celebrate Christmas with the other in-laws.
Lucy is survived by her son Kenneth and his wife Carol of Princeton, New Jersey; her son Lawrence and his wife Karen of Speculator, NY and her daughter Louise and her husband Keith Vandervelt, of North Haledon, NJ. She had 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A private graveside memorial service for the immediate family will be held in the spring, when Lucy will be laid to rest beside her long-loved husband Tommy.
