Patrick H. McHugh was born to Patrick H. McHugh, Sr. and Dorothy C. Kunsemuller-McHugh on December 10, 1934, in Yonkers. Patrick attended P.S. 4 in Yonkers [1939-40]; Sacred Heart Elementary School, Yonkers [1940- 1948], and Glenclyffe High School, Garrison, NY [1948-1952]. Patrick became a member of the first novitiate class of the new Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Mary on August 31, 1952, at St. Lawrence Friary, Milton, MA, and received the name "Jerome." Following his first profession on September 1, 1953, Jerome began his philosophy studies at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY [1953-1956], and moved to the new St. Anthony Friary, Hudson, NH, where he completed his undergraduate studies [1956-1957]. He returned to Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY, where he completed his theological studies [1957-1961]. Father Jerome was ordained to the priesthood by Auxiliary Bishop James Griffiths on June 25, 1960, at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers. Fr. Jerome spent his pastoral year at Sacred Heart, Yonkers, where he ministered as a parochial assistant. From 1962-1971, Father resided at St. Francis Friary, Providence, RI, [Provincialate], where he served as the Provincial Secretary, Procurator, Archivist, Spiritual Director of the Secular Franciscan fraternity and extraordinary confessor of the novices at Milton, MA. The provincial offices moved to St. Conrad Friary, White Plains, NY, in 1971, where Fr. Jerome continued in the offices of Provincial Secretary and Procurator [Treasurer] for a total of 55 years. He was a member of NATRI [National Associate of Treasurers of Religious Institutes] and CORT II [Conference of Religious Treasurers Region II]. Fr. Jerome offered his services on Sundays to St. Anthony Church [West Harrison, NY], where he ministered for over 22 years. Later, he ministered on Sundays at St. Theresa [Briarcliff Manor, NY] and Our Lady of the Wayside [Millwood, NY] until his health failed. Fr. Jerome's dedication to the Capuchin Order reached far beyond the four walls of his office. For over 25 years, he generously served as recording secretary of the NAPCC [North American & Pacific Capuchin Conference] and assisted the Financial Offices of the Capuchin Generalate in Rome. Father moved to our senior friar community of St. Clare, Yonkers, in 2017 and later to Cabrini of Westchester, Dobbs Ferry, in 2018. Fr. Jerome was supported by his sister, Martha McHugh-Hubbard and husband Johnny; his brother, Fr. John P. McHugh, O.F.M. Cap.; his nieces and nephews, Brian [Donna] Hubbard; Michelle Duncan; Kim [Timm] Justice; Steven [Luli] Hubbard, and his grandnieces and grandnephews, Keith, Amanda, Kyle, Adam, Eric, Kayla, Haley, and Kai. A cousin, Ann McHugh, was a faithful caregiver during Father's final illness.The viewing is at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY, on Thursday, February 27, 2020, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY, on Friday, February 28, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the friars' cemetery in Yonkers. A light luncheon will be served in the Sacred Heart Friary dining room following the interment.
