Edward P. Dee, 92, a long-time resident of Irvington, peacefully passed away on February 10, 2024. Ed was born in Yonkers on January 3, 1932 to Margaret and Thomas Dee. He was raised in Yonkers with his brother and two sisters and attended Sacred Heart Grammar School. He graduated from the Capuchin Preparatory Seminary in Garrison, New York. Upon his graduation from high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, spending three years of his service at the Air Force Base in Kirknewton, Scotland. Following his military service, Ed graduated from Iona College and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Fordham University.
Ed dedicated his life to serving others. He worked at the Cardinal McCloskey Home for Children and Family Services (now Cardinal McCloskey Community Services) for over forty years and retired as the Associate Executive Director. He also provided counseling services at St. Mary’s Church in Yonkers for many years.
Above all else, Ed was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Smith at Sacred Heart Church on August 9, 1969. In 1970, Eddie and Betty settled in White Plains, where they raised their three children, David, Lisa and Thomas. Ed was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister, and later, Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington. He was also a volunteer at Burke Rehabilitation Center for many years.
Following his retirement, Ed and Betty moved to Irvington and Ed discovered his love for writing. The Yonkers Historical Society published three books he authored about his memories of his childhood in Yonkers. Ed greatly enjoyed his retirement years, which included rounds of golf in Garrison with his friends and children, travels with Betty to air force reunions, and many treasured family vacations at the Jersey Shore and Cape Cod. He was a devoted supporter of the Iona Gaels Men’s Basketball Team, a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, a softball coach and tennis enthusiast. He had much love for the family dogs and was a longtime member of the Yonkers Male Glee Club.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Betty; he was the cherished father of David Dee and his wife Aundria, of Chappaqua, Elizabeth (Lisa) Stanton and her husband Tom of Briarcliff Manor, and Thomas Dee and his wife Christina of Hawthorne. He was a loving grandfather to Jackson Dee and Luke Stanton. He is also remembered as a dear brother-in-law to Cornelius Smith of Yonkers, and was an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Ed was predeceased by his siblings, Msgr. Dacian Dee, JoAnn Allison and Mary Alice Swantek.
Ed’s Catholic faith was a guiding light throughout his life, providing strength and solace in times of joy and sorrow. Ed will be remembered for the love and warmth he shared with all who were fortunate to know him. His legacy is a testament to a life well-lived, marked by kindness, compassion and his devotion to his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory to Calvary Hospital are appreciated.
