Annie was born in 1932 in Maumeen, Lettermore, County Galway, Ireland, to Michael and Annie Kelly (O’Malley). She grew up beside the sea, on a large rural farm, in Connemara. With her sister, Bridie, she emigrated at age 17 to the United States. She lived in New York City (Manhattan and the Bronx) for many years before settling in Yonkers. In New York City she met the love of her life, Walter Haiduk, and together had five beautiful children. Tragically, Annie’s husband, Walter, passed away unexpectedly in 1981, but Annie persevered raising her children and becoming an esteemed family matriarch and valued member of Christ the King Church in Yonkers. In America, Annie worked for the church as a cleaner and cook, and later cared for the elderly. Annie’s 3-generation home, which she shared with her youngest daughter Josephine (Chris) Chiara and Josephine’s three daughters Annie, Maggie, and MaryKate, was always open and served as the hub for the family and friends, near and far. Annie was affectionately known as “Nanny” by her many grandchildren and other members of the family. She loved attending Mass, and gathering with friends and family for tea around the dining room table. Annie also relished the chance to cook Sunday dinner while listening to Irish radio, tell stories and laugh so hard she cried.
Annie is survived by her five children, Susie (Bob) Redmond, Walter (Kelly) Haiduk, Ann Levine, Peggy Wilkins, and Josephine (Chris) Chiara and eleven grandchildren, Ann Patricia (PJ) Goldfeder, Michael (Aimee) Aubry, Shannon (Jed) Hudgins, Robert Redmond Jr., Danielle (Zachary) Denver, Sara (Samuel) Levine-Rovner, Walter and Caitlin Haiduk, Annie, Maggie and MaryKate Chiara and thirteen great grandchildren, Michael, Ronny, Payton, Lilliann, Ian, Joshua, Jaxen, Joseph, Luke, Jake, Sara, Harvey and Wyatt. Annie is survived by two sisters, Maggie and Kate of England and many nieces and nephews both in America and abroad. Annie was predeceased by her husband, Walter, her sons-in-law, Steven Levine and Scotty Wilkins, her brothers Mike, Petie, Sonny, Joe, Padraig, and sisters, Mary, Bridie, and Tess. Annie lived her life in faith. In lieu of flowers, Masses said for our mom would be greatly appreciated. We are so grateful to the lovely Irish ladies who helped us care for Mom at home: Rachel, Olivia, Jordan, Denise, Fiona and Geraldine.
