Robert Bob E. Axelsen

Robert E. Axelsen, a resident of Yarmouth, ME died on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on March 2, 1928 in Portland, ME, to August M. and Mildred C. Weston Axelsen. He attended Portland High School.

On May 29, 1948, he married Arlene E. Hanson, his devoted wife of 56 years. Together they raised three children.

Bob had a successful career as a salesman for Maine Surgical Supply Company for over 30 years. He retired in 1986. He and his wife devoted their time and energy to restoring Ledgefield Farm, their home in Falmouth where they resided from 1971 to 1999.

Bob was a talented woodworker building many pieces of furniture over the years for family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, raising beef cattle, and times spent with family.

He was a member of St. Ansgar Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portland, ME. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of the Portland Elks, Portland Eagles, Portland Club, Cumberland Farmer’s Association, and was a Mason.

He is pre-deceased by his wife, Arlene E. Axelsen, and his son, Thomas S. Axelsen. He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen M. Hoglund and her husband Clifford E. Hoglund of Cape Coral, FL; Christine L. Wernig and her husband, Scott E. Wernig, of Falmouth, ME; his daughter-in-law Patricia A. Axelsen of Falmouth, ME; seven grandchildren, Erik and Kurt Hoglund, Emily Curry, Joshua Wernig, Kate, Hans, and Neil Axelsen; three great grandchildren; and one brother, James E. Axelsen of Roanoke, VA.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, June 8, from 3-5 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at the Lindquist Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Moss Side Cemetery, Cumberland Center, ME.
