South Freeport- Mary Kennedy, 87, a longtime resident of South Freeport, Maine passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 with her family by her side. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 4, 1926, she was the daughter of Gordon and Margaret (Driscoll) MacLeod.
Mary was a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree from Boston College School of Nursing and a master’s from Boston University. Mary had a long and active career as a nurse and nursing administrator.
After marrying Daniel Kennedy in 1951, they bought the old fox farm in South Freeport and moved there to raise their family. She continued working in her profession at the Pineland Training Center and the VA Hospital in Togus, Maine.
Mary was an early entrepreneur and in the late 1970’s, with her daughter Kathleen, opened Mary’s Ice Cream in Portland and a second operation in Freeport. She was also very active in civic affairs and established the Freeport Elders Association that continues to provide services for Freeport senior citizens today. In her later years she was also an avid gardener with the support of her “Garden Angels”, Claudia and Debbie.
Mary was predeceased by her former husband and by two of her four children, Daniel and Kathleen. She is survived by her twin sons Michael P. Kennedy and his wife Susan of Holland, MA and Gerald P. Kennedy and his wife Mary Lou of So. Freeport. Mary has seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday, December 8 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday December 9 at 9:00 AM at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 134 Main Street, Freeport. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be at the South Freeport Cemetery at a later date.
