In loving memory of our beloved mother, Lorelei HB Lowell, June 19, 1944 - March 16,2025.
Ps. 18:2: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield,
and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Rejoice with us friends and family, the Lord has gathered unto Himself our beloved mother, Lorelei Lowell, and delivered her from a lifetime of physical suffering and afflictions. She passed away peacefully at Coastal Manor, Yarmouth, Maine, on March 16.
She had her first spinal surgery in 1966, was in and out of the hospital from 66'-69', and then went on to endure nearly 50 orthopedic surgeries and procedures before she died.
Despite this, she will be remembered for what she gave to us all in life.
Mother Lowell will be remembered for all the holidays and birthdays, all the cooking and celebrations with and for the children, all the dinners, all the presents and special occasions, all the trips and vacations, all the baked bean suppers every Saturday night from November through April every year, open to anyone who walked in, and there were 100's over the years.
She will be remembered for all the gardens (vegetable, spice, flowers, anything), and all the seasonal foraging and harvesting. The house was always filled with the scents of every wild flower, spice, herb and plant, all summer and fall, every year, all for her family who she adored.
She will be remembered for all the animals we had growing up, horses, donkeys, chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, ferrets, snakes, rats (to feed the snakes), mice, hamsters and gerbils, all manner of aquarium life (both water and dry environments), and for all the beloved pets buried beneath her bedroom window over the years.
She went hunting and fishing with all her sons, and could butcher game with the best. She read incessantly. She devoured Asimov, and loved Stephen Donaldson. Not a Christmas passed without new handmade knitted hats and mittens, and birthday presents were as likely to be new handmade, hand-sewn clothes as anything else. To this day her oil paintings adorn the walls, with all of her drawings, sketches, watercolors and charcoals, she excelled at every artistic endeavor. At times she worked side by side with her husband at the wooden boat shop in Yarmouth, she did much of the fine detail painting and bright work.
Mother Lowell was born in Castine, 1944, to Hazelton (died 1983) and Alice Hayes (died 2004) Bowden. She was the third of six children, predeceased by her older brother David (died 1946), younger sister Darlene (died 2012), and youngest brother Phillip (died 2004). Two siblings are still with us, Dennis Bowden (married to Jeanette) of Stockton Springs, ME, and Paula Bowden (married to DeFaurice) of Penobscot, ME.
She is survived by all seven of her children, 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grand children, all who will all miss her dearly:
Michael Lowell, Pownal, ME;
Blaine Davis (married to Elaine), St, Croix (2 children, 4 grandchildren);
Alicia Phoenix, Richmond, VA (3 children, 1 grandchild);
Misha Davis, Bath, ME (4 children, 14 grandchildren);
Jamie Lowell (married to Ruth), Pownal, ME (4 children);
Jesse Lowell, Brunswick, ME (3 children);
Joseph Lowell (married to Megan), Raymond, ME.
But this is hardly the end of the story. The supper table was always open, but so was our home. Every straggler, displaced individual, rejected, forlorn or afflicted soul, every friend (and often strangers) who needed supper, a bed, friends, help, or just wanted or needed a family found their way to our home. For years, from the early 70's to the early 2000's countless folks made their way here, and were cared for and comforted by Mother Lowell.
Proverbs 31:29: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
Thank God for our Mother.
Friends and family are invited to Lorelei's Memorial Service Saturday March 29th at 3 PM at the First Parish Congregational Church, 422 Hallowell Road in Pownal. Maine. A reception will follow so friends and family can eat and share stories about Mom.
