Jane Plate Volin

Jane was born in New Rochelle, NY to Kenneth Edmund and Edna Miner Fash. She was 2 when her father died, and while separated from her older brother and mother she bounced between homes while her mother trained and then worked as a nurse. The family was reunited when her mom re-married to Henry Plate. The family settled in Westchester County, NY. On more than one occasion, Jane and her friends forged absence notes from school and went to the Paramount Theater in NYC to see Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman.

Jane met Everett Volin at Colgate University at the peak of WWII. Everyone was enlisting, and the prevailing mood was that you had better get married because you may not have another chance. They married in June of 1942 and their first son was born at Fort Bragg, NC in June 1944. When Everett was posted overseas, Jane took their baby home to her mother’s until the war ended. The couple moved to Shank’s Village in Orangeburg, NY - a former military base repurposed for returning GI’s and their families. Shortly thereafter the family moved to northern New Jersey, and after the birth of their 4th child settled in Haworth, NJ. Jane loved raising her children.

Jane always dabbled with painting. She took art classes at night and won 1st prize for her oil portrait of her son. She eventually switched from oils to water color, and she never stopped painting.

Jane and Everett bought 100 acres in the Berkshire Hills of MA. The family would drive up in the summers, and Jane would act as camp counselor to her children, and their friends and cousins. They eventually built a beautiful home on the property, complete with pond and painting studio. Jane established expansive flowerbeds and would ride down the hill between them in her little red wagon.

Jane was an accomplished artist, gardener, and seamstress. She even made her daughter’s wedding dress! She stenciled and sewed quilts, made floor cloths, braided rugs from wool scraps, and knit sweaters without patterns, giving them to whomever they fit.

In February of 1993, Jane and Everett moved into a cottage at OceanView in Falmouth, ME. They took advantage of all the activities, and of course Jane planted flowers and started attending the community art group. She soon took on the role of facilitator, and led the group for 30 years. Jane loved her Ocean View community.

During her many happy years at Ocean View, Jane volunteered at the library, participated in fashion shows, worked at yard sales, taught painting at Falmouth House, and put on countless art exhibits. She continued painting with her art group until the end. She loved her little green VW bug. Jane was full of the vitality of life and of love.

Jane is pre-deceased by her husband Everett and her son Peter. She is survived by her children David and his wife Mary and their sons Ross and Eric Volin; daughter-in-law Faye and her and Peter’s daughter Jill Volin; Hank and his wife Cindi and their sons Ben and Sam Volin; and Laura and her husband Alex Cullen and their sons Peter and Andrew; and by 3 beautiful great-granddaughters Olivia and Anara Volin and Amelia Cullen.

A memorial for Jane will be held at OceanView Retirement Community, 20 Blueberry Lane, Falmouth ME 04105 on Friday December 6, 2024 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
