Yarmouth- George Robert Merrill, 92, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, June 17, 2023. He was the second of four children of Geroge O. Merrill and Lillian W. Merrill. Born and raised in Yarmouth, he attended North Yarmouth Academy where he shined as an athlete. After graduating, he enrolled at Portland Junior College before enlisting in the Marines during the Korean War. His pride in service and love of country were close to his heart, and remained steadfast after returning home where he met his great love, Patricia M. Merrill. A gentleman to all, but a doting husband to one, his love still follows her to this day. Married in 1955, they built their home on West Main Street in Yarmouth, not far from the house he was born in. He grew to become the Maine deputy governor of the American Savings & Loan Institute.
A true native son, his latchstrings to Yarmouth remained fastened throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Jaycees, the Casco Lodge of Masons, and the First Parish Congregational Church. A gifted Yarmouth Townies ballplayer and an avid contributor to the Red Cross, the only thing put before his community was his family.
His children and grandchildren could always find him on the sidelines as either a coach or a fan, cheering them on with a distinct rah rah style. Whether one of his dogs or his kids, they knew the piercing sound of his whistle meant to come running. His family could also count on him at weddings to bring a jitterbug flair to the dance floor. His class was Sinatra-esque.
His smile was bright, and his jokes were nearly as funny as the sputtering exhale that arrived in tow with the punchline. He was a man of action and believed in letting one's good conduct speak for oneself. The “Pop laugh” and the character of his conduct will echo throughout time.
George leaves behind his wife Patricia Merrill of Yarmouth, brother Owen Merrill of Whitefield, daughter Debra Fransoso of Georgia, and three sons, Jeffrey Merrill of Kennebunk, James Merrill of Yarmouth, and Jon Merrill of New Gloucester, along with ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ramona Sylvester, and brother Clinton “Kenny” Merrill.
Service will begin at 4:30 pm Thursday, June 22nd at Lindquist Funeral Home (1 Mayberry Lane,Yarmouth) where a visitation will follow until 6:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House or the American Red Cross.
