Freeport - Cy Tompson, of Freeport, passed away on July 24, 2011, at home, surrounded by his family, following a six-month battle with brain cancer. He was born in Westbrook, ME to John E. and Vyra R. Hamilton Tompson. Cy attended Walnut Hill and the Old Town Hall schools before graduating from Greely Institute in 1951 and serving in the U.S. Air Force as an airline mechanic. He married Beverly A. Condon of Freeport, ME, and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Cy and Bev enjoyed traveling across the United States in their motor home, visiting family and friends, and entertaining family and friends at their home in Freeport. As a couple, they truly enjoyed dancing together. Cy was a Past Master of the Freeport Masonic Lodge No.23, AF & AM and served as Worthy Patron of Casco Chapter No.160 Order of the Eastern Star for multiple years.
He was an active member of the First Parish Congregational Church, UCC in Freeport serving many roles; he especially enjoyed cooking the beans for the monthly bean supper. Cy was a master mechanic who employed and mentored many family members over the past 20 years at his business, Back Bay Auto, in Portland and was well known for his expertise in foreign auto cars. His interests included ice racing, hunting, camping, gardening, cribbage and cards, driving his 2-stroke Saab, watching Red Sox games, and participating in outdoor activities with his children and grandchildren. Cy was famous for his pancake breakfasts, which he enthusiastically cooked for his children and grandchildren on Sunday mornings.
He is survived by his wife, Bev; daughters: Jewell Woerter and husband, Dale of Bowdoin; Victoria Burtchell and husband, Kenneth of Ellsworth; Lorna Spargo and husband, Glenn of Brookline, NH; sons: Charles Tompson, Jr. and wife, Joni of Freeport; Paul Pinkham and wife, Caroline of Gorham; eleven grandchildren: Bethany Johnson, William Woerter, Jacob Burtchell, Haley Carmichael, David Burtchell, Kimberly and Samantha Spargo, Hunter and Bridget Tompson, Andrew and Alex Pinkham; three great-grandchildren: Justyn and Sydney Johnson and Lauren Burtchell. He is also survived by a brother, William Tompson and wife, Cindy of North Yarmouth; sisters: Joan Labbe of Westbrook, Phyllis Rhude of Ohio, Carol Black and husband, George of North Yarmouth and Lin Murphy of North Yarmouth. He was predeceased by a brother, David Tompson.
All services will be held at the North Yarmouth Congregational Church, UCC, 3 Gray Rd, North Yarmouth, ME. Visiting hours will be on Friday evening July 29 from 5-7 pm, followed by Masonic and Eastern Star services at 7 pm. The funeral service will be on Saturday, July 30 at 1 pm and will be officiated by Rev. Peter Heinrichs. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery followed by a reception in the church hall.
