Yarmouth – Aubrey Currie Thomas, 74, died at home on January 25, 2015 following a year-long fight against lung cancer.
Aubrey was born on May 8, 1940 in Bronxville, N.Y. to Allen and Muriel (Currie) Thomas. He was raised at the Graham School, run by his father and grandfather in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. He attended Tufts University in Summerville, graduating with his BA in Sociology.
The day he graduated from Tufts, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USMC. While on active duty he spent time in Vietnam where he was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He joined the USMMC Reserves when he moved to Maine and rose to the Lieutenant Colonel. He retired after 27 years in the Marine Corps in 2000.
Following active duty, he attended Hunter College in New York City to complete his Master of Clinical Social Work. He then followed the family tradition of service to children and families and worked in New York City. He then moved to Maine where he spent 23 years at Sweetser of Saco. The last 11 years were as Executive Director. He spent a couple years consulting then began work at Spurwink of Portland as the Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Coordinator. He retired in 2008.
Aubrey is survived by his beloved wife of 14 ½ years, May Matheson-Thomas; his daughters: Megan (Michael) Genthner of Windham and Aubin (Brian) Libby of South Portland; grandson, Maxfield Genthner; his sisters: Margery (Jared) Clark of Gorham, Mary (Dean) Schirm of Thousand Oaks, CA; sister-in-law, Heidi Thomas of Anaheim, CA; uncle Paul Thomas of Northbrook, Il; along with cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Richard.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Devon Evans and the staff of New England Cancer Specialist for their professionalism, support and care during this difficult journey. They also extend thanks to Hospice of Southern Maine for making it possible for Aubrey to be at home until the end.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 5 to 7 pm at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096. A memorial service will also be held at the funeral home on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 2 pm followed by a reception at the funeral home.
