Walter James Kennedy III, affectionately called "Grumpy" by his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023. He was born in St. Louis on May 17, 1947, and spent his formative years in Yakima, the oldest son of Walter James Kennedy Jr. and Jean (Campbell) Kennedy.
During his high school years, Jim's exceptional athleticism shone brightly as he excelled in football, contributing to the 1964 state championship team, and competed with tenacity in wrestling and baseball. His performances on the field and mat were not merely displays of physical talent; they were reflections of his quiet determination and strong work ethic, traits that would define both his character and his legacy.
His unwavering commitment to learning was evident throughout his life. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Washington, while on the wrestling team, and in 1972, achieved his Juris Doctorate from Willamette Law School. Jim's 45-year career was marked by excellence in his practice, earning him respect from colleagues and adversaries alike. Jim was recognized by members of the Washington State Bar Association as one of the best family law attorneys. He was appointed by the Governor to serve on the original task force to develop child support guidelines for the state of Washington. Jim was a lecturer on family law issues at legal seminars. His dedication to his clients and his high ethical standards were the hallmark of his legal career.
Jim's life was marked by enduring love and commitment. His romance with Cheryl, which began when a bold, young Jim confessed his love for her in the second grade, and they were wed in the summer of '69. Together, they nurtured a family of four wonderful children. A constant source of strength and compassion, Jim was more than just the head of the family—he was its foundation. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion and joy, having enriched the lives of many with his generous spirit. His was a narrative of love, filled with hope and dedication.
To his seven grandchildren, he was affectionately known as "Grumpy," a nickname that contrasted sharply with his warm and exuberant heart. His face would light up with a mischievous smile at their playful antics, and his laughter was a familiar soundtrack at family gatherings. A devoted spectator, he watched with pride in their athletic endeavors.
Jim also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He found solace and joy in hunting and fishing, hobbies that he often shared with family and friends.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of integrity, wisdom, and boundless love. He is survived by his wife Cheryl, his children, Walt (Nicole) Kennedy, Jason (Nikkita) Kennedy, Caitlin (Mark) Schaake, and Meghan Kennedy, his grandchildren, Addy and Avery Kennedy, Conley and Riggs Kennedy and Kennedy, George and Andrew Schaake. He is also survived by his brother Tom (Teresa) Kennedy, sister Jean Drummond, numerous nieces and nephews and many cherished friends from over the years.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 2:00 pm on November 20, 2023 at Provisions Restaurant, 2710 Terrace Heights Dr.
