Sarah was born September 1, 1929, in Summit, Arkansas. She graduated from Yellville-Summit High School in 1948, and married Herbert Guthrie, whom she called the “freckle faced boy” when she was just 7 years old.
In 1950, Herb and Sarah moved to Yakima where they both immediately went to work for Marley Orchards. Herb worked his way up to ranch foreman and Sarah packed apples at the warehouse. They remained at these jobs until they retired.
In 1979, Sarah earned her diploma as an office clerk from Yakima Business College.
Herb and Sarah were longtime members of the Gleed Valley Assembly of God Church and later the Stone Church in Yakima.
They were avid fans for many decades of Highland High School basketball, where all of their children attended school, making trips to the state tournament in Tacoma most years. Sarah enjoyed shopping and bowling, and was an outstanding gardener, as was Herb. In retirement, they spent many weeks camping at Pleasant Valley next to the river.
Sarah loved her family and was well known for her sewing and cooking skills.
Her grandchildren were the joy of her life.
Sarah was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herbert; a daughter, Judy Guthrie Pilger; her parents, Walter and Mary Gray; and all nine of her siblings.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Steve) Larsen; a son, Rick (Carrie) Guthrie; and a daughter, Glenda (Bill) Epperheimer. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
There will be a family graveside service at a later date.
The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Ponderosa Assisted Living, where Sarah enjoyed the last eight years of her life; and also to the caring staff at Cottage in the Meadow for making her final days so comfortable and peaceful.
