Rose Marion Ames of Yakima died Thursday, February 9, 2012, at her home. This is the home where Rose spent her childhood and began her friendship with gardens, a friendship that deepened with her marriage to John (Jack) Ames; in the Norton home in Yakima, as together they developed Rose's parents garden into one of the most beautiful gardens in Yakima. Rose's garden became the essence of her life. She believed and lived knowing that “no matter what happens, as long as I live in humbleness with my garden, my life will be beautiful and strong and sure of its direction".
Rose was born August 30, 1915 in Terrace Heights to Eva Bell (Barbree) Norton and Luke W. Norton. Later the Norton family moved to Yakima where Rose and Jack lived for over 56 years. Rose was a long standing member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, a fifty year member of Woman's Century Club and belonged to many garden clubs and societies. She was both a homemaker and full time volunteer, sharing her time and secretarial skills with Children's (Orthopedic) Hospital in Seattle.
In 2006, Rose was presented the Anna Clise award for "Individual Achievement" for her outstanding contributions to Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
Rose is survived by a daughter Connie Duquella, one granddaughter, and a nephew, Lauren Fletcher, all of Portland.
Rose’s husband of over 70 years, Jack Ames, their daughters, Lorraine Ames and Marion Ames Magula all preceded her in death.
