He was born in Walla Walla, Washington on March 26, 1931 to O.T. (Sandy) and Hallie Sandberg.
He graduated from Toppenish, Washington High School and attended the University of Washington where he played football for the Huskies. He remained a loyal Husky fan throughout his life.
He could always be seen proudly wearing the colors of purple and gold, and never missing a game.
After college, he returned to Toppenish where he started the family grocery store, Savin’ Sandys with his father Sandy and his brother Jim. Savin’ Sandys became a landmark business where people still reminisce about their fond memories of this unique store of its time.
He loved his community and served as city councilman and mayor. He also helped found the Grid Kids football program in Toppenish. He was an active member of the Masons and Shriners, serving in his local masons Lodge for over 50 years.
But, his greatest love was his family. He married Delores Voss in 1952, spending 64 years together. Together, they raised 3 children and their legacy has now grown to 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Surviving family includes his wife, Delores, children Mike Sandberg, Karen (Weldon) Schademan, Don (Marina) Sandberg.
Dick, a loving husband, father and grandfather will be deeply missed.
