Gertrude graduated from Bristol High School in 1947. In 1953 she married Robert Allen and the couple was blessed with five sons. In 1967 the family moved to Tacoma, WA and then to Yakima, WA in 1975.
Gertie worked in the medical records department at Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1994. She was an active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church for 43 years. In 2011 Robert passed away after 57 years of marriage. “The Allen Boys” hold fond memories of a mother who approached life with kindness, compassion, humor, and a sense of adventure. She was fond of telling many stories of growing up in Connecticut and of her years of adventures raising five sons. She was known by all as a woman of deep and abiding Christian faith that guided her in her daily life.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents Edward and Hulda (Tober) Kunert, her sisters Lydia, Martha, and Edna, brothers Arthur and Erhardt, and son Gare Allen. Gertrude is survived by four sons, Mark, Michael (Linda), Donald (Vaunette), and Paul (Ann) as well as fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Gertie was blessed with an extensive church family and too many friends to count. Her family is thankful to all the friends that helped her in her later years, along with her physician Dr. Odhett Cojocaru and the staff at Blossom Place.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 10. Interment will be in Bristol, CT. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church “Feed the 5000” fund. To share a memory of Gertrude visit www.lepfuneralhome.com.
