Evan John Mettie, 34, passed away Sunday, October 14th, 2018 at The Cottage In The Meadow, surrounded by his family and loved ones after a 12 year battle with his injuries suffered in Iraq on New Years Day 2006. Evan was born on October 19th, 1983 in Yakima, WA.
He was the eldest of three children of David J and Denise C (Gray) Mettie of Selah WA. In 2002 he graduated Selah H.S. from where he immediately joined the Army. Evan served his 1st deployment in 2003 as a Cavalry Scout of Bull Troop, 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment based out of Ft. Polk, LA. His 2nd deployment was in 2005 with Alpha Troop 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry, 3rd BCT Rakkasan, 101st Airborne, based out of Fort Campbell, KY.
With tremendous support from the community and the VA, Evan was able to occupy a beautiful addition to his family home and there he received world class care from a loving family and caring staff. Though terribly injured, blessedly, he was still able to express his quirky sense of humor to those close around him and brought much cheer to one and all.
Growing up, Evan was a Cub Scout and then a Boy Scout throughout high school.
He was a track and cross country guy and enjoyed the triple jump mostly, we think, because it looked kinda strange and nobody else was doing it. His secret, he said, was to eat a couple of raw hot dogs before his event.
Evan was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Mettie and Evelyn (Bryan-Mettie) Wilson, Bill and Ruth (Vitol) Gray, and an uncle, Mike Mettie. He is survived by his sisters, Kira (Mettie) Nason and Breanne Mettie as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26th at Keith & Keith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Yakima Foursquare Church, 700 N. 40th Ave., Yakima on Saturday, October 27th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
Concluding services with full military honors will be held at Tahoma Cemetery.
